BMW E46 Coupe Front Panels Installation

Approximate installation time: 1.5 hour/s.

Necessary tools: Drill, 3 or 3.5mm drill bit, star screwdriver, 8mm socket or fixed socket + Allen wrench.

Installation difficulty: Easy (basic mechanical knowledge)

As you will see, the installation is quite simple, but it requires some patience and checking that everything is in place to guarantee that everything is as it should. Don't rush and make sure you follow the steps. A correct installation always guarantees a better result.

The first thing we must do is identify the screws and hardware.

For the front panels:

x2 large spacer bushings

x2 small spacer bushings.

x2 strap pulls.

x2 aluminum moldings

x12 short self-tapping screws.

x4 long sheet metal screws.

x2 m6 allen screws

x2 handles / straps

The first step will be to dismantle our OEM panel from the car and completely remove the airbag module (it is important to disconnect the battery for safety before handling it). Once we have the area exposed, we will use one of the airbag anchor points to fix our OEM lever there later.

Here it is recommended that you install the car's original lever on the panel since this will serve as a guide to know the final position of the panel. The anchoring hole of the lever in its central part must coincide with the hole that was left free when removing the airbag. In this photo, you can see where the lever would finally be placed before installing it on the panel. Also, remember to put the opening cable in this position, since after trying several options, it still works perfectly in this position.

To install the OEM lever on the panel, we simply have to remove the rear cover, so that it is left in 2 pieces. Here we will put the aluminum cover supplied with the hole for the handle strap and bend the aluminum tabs so that it remains fixed in place:

Likewise, we will make a hole in the part marked with an "X" since our strap will pass through there when it is screwed to the car door itself.

We place the lever on the panel, and again use its own cover so that it is held in "sandwich" mode:

Place the panel on the door and screw the central hole of the lever into the free point of the Airbag with one of the M6 allen screws supplied in the kit, so you will know where to make the rest of the holes.

We mark the holes in the door, using the ones that are already made in the panel as a reference and from there, we remove the panel again and make the holes, remembering to mark the point where we want to screw our handle (make a hole in the door itself to fix it correctly with the corresponding screws)

Here it is important that you have the window up, since if your drill bit is long and you have the glass down, you run the risk of hitting it when making the hole. Raise the glass, and avoid risks.

Return the panel to the door and remove the strap through the slot in the molding and screw the sheet metal screws, taking into account that the front one (just below the rearview mirror) has a large socket and is installed with the other long sheet metal screw that we have remaining. and in the rear part (latch) it has the other small bushing with the medium-sized sheet metal thread. This bushing is used so that when tightening the screw, it serves as a stop and does not deform the panel.
